PICMasters Writing Service

This is a free service to MERG members who require their Microchip PIC Microcontrollers written or updated with the latest MERG firmware or a program of their own generation.

Established primarily for those CBUS SLiM users who need to update their microcontrollers with firmware containing the new bootloading routines but open to other requirements such as updating the firmware on Servo4 and DCC Decoder modules.

It should be noted that all current CBUS firmware incorporates a bootloader which enables the latest updates to be downloaded from the MERG site and written to an onboard PIC via a CAN-USB module and the FLiM Configuration Utility (FCU).

Please note that SOIC and other Surface Mount Device PICs require either a special mounting adaptor attached to the Programmer or must be written in situ on their application pcbs via an ICSP link. This will need discussion with our volunteer Programmers so please contact by email first.

Please mail your PICs direct to the member concerned, mounted in antistatic foam or plastic DIL tube with a clear indication of which firmware you require loaded and include an SAE with sufficient postage for return and your contact email address. Unprotected ICs will not survive the mailing system. Please note that the thickness of such mailed items requires at least 1st cl large postage.

If you require firmware of your own generation written then please email your hex file to the member concerned.

PICs may also be requested to be written from the Kit Locker at point of sale, which service only attracts a minor charge when purchasing a programmed PIC. This service will be performed by the Kit Sales Manager.

Please note that none of our volunteers or the Kit Sales Manager accept responsibility for the correct functioning of your own firmware. Only MERG-approved firmware, as written into kits, will be supported.
